My Heros

These are just some of the people that have been a positive influence on me and my life.  Two are 'everyday heroes' who help people in need, stand up for others, or make sacrifices for family and friends, and two are fictional heroes who I admire for fighting oppression and overcoming challenges.

My mamma

My mum was just 41 when she was widowed when my dad died after a short battle with cancer, leaving her alone with three teenagers. She is, without doubt, the person in my life who has taught me empathy, understanding, and tolerance.

When she was young, you dared not date, or marry, out with your own faith or ethnicity, let alone someone of the same sex. And yet she embraces, wholeheartedly, my wee sister’s love for her same sex partner.

And mum would say she’s Christian and yet she respects that others, including me, her own daughter, don’t share her beliefs.

She is my number one hero, and my ultimate role model.

Linda Britton

Linda was one of the first of only a handful of celebrants authorised to conduct humanist marriages back when they were first legalised in 2005 - a true pioneer!

Linda inspired me to become a celebrant in 2017. She was my mentor through to qualification and became a trusted friend.

Linda continues to inspire all of us at Humanist Ceremonies Scotland - offering guidance and support. She is our guru, our yoda, our matriarch.

As well as still marrying a few lucky couples, Linda is also available to provide ceremony cover for us in the event of emergencies.

Katniss Everdeen

Katniss Everdeen is the fictional character from Suzanne Collins‘ trilogy, ‘The Hunger Games’.

I consider Katniss inspirational for her desire to protect the vulnerable; embodying strength, resilience, and authentic humanity.

June Osborne

June Osborne is the fictional character from Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’.

I consider June inspirational for her relentless resilience and defiance against a totalitarian society.
